Geotechnical Observations recently completed a 15 month programme of monitoring for a 20m high embankment on the Great Western route near to Bristol.

Slope deformations were monitored using vertically orientated inclinometer tubes supplemented with slip indicators, whilst track-bed deformations were investigated using horizontally orientated inclinometer tubes passing through the embankment approximately 2m below the track (see photograph). Track levels were also recorded using a digital precise level. Pore water pressures (positive and negative) were measured using GeO modular piezometers with Type I filters to a depth of 5m, Type II filters at intermediate depths and Type III filters from 8m to 17m.
